The islands offer a sfe haven to thousands of seabirds including Puffins, Guillimots, Terns and many more. The Islands host the largest colony of Grey Seals in the north Sea.

Whilst being a haven to a wide range of marine life the islands have been a hazard to shipping with literally hundreds of ships coming to grief on the small stretch of coast, most famously, the 'Forfarshire' and the heroic tale of Grace Darling.
