Somali

The Somali, a 6810 ton passenger-cargo steamer built in 1930 measured 459ft x 61ft was bound for Hong Kong via the Firth of Forthfor convoy assembly. She was sunk in March 1941 after being bombed by a German Heinkel III and set on fire. She exploded whilst under tow to be beached. There were no casualties.

Diving the Somali

We currently own the wreck of the Somali and have no objection to people on it, but we don't own the cargo.

The Somali lies in 30m of water standing up to 5m proud of the seabed. She should be only dived on slack water as she is swept with strong currents.

She was in Diver Magazine issue March 2000 "Wreck Tour 13" you can get a plan of the wreck here.

She was carrying a general cargo which consisted of medical supplies, cosmetics, lead soldiers, jeeps, film etc. All of which can still be found with a good rummage.

Her stern gun is still in place at the North end of the wreck.
